Softbait Tips
by Pete
This issue we are please to run this contribution from Brett Rathe (pictured below), the owner and skipper of ‘Assasin’. This is the boat that has been used for most of the development of softbaits here in NZ. Brett is the country’s foremost exponent of the techniques required. We appreciate that he made the time available to write this for us...

Atomic Birds and Other Soft Baits
by Michael Rendle
To start this feature on soft baits I need to set the scene. I was invited, with various other members of the fishing media, to attend one of four fishing days organized by Pure Fishing, the importers of Berkley and Abu. Malcolm Dawson is the manager of Pure Fishing. That’s him on the front cover. Knowing I had this feature planned Mal had kindly given me the fourth day which left us the option of a stay away night if we wanted. Using Brett Rathe’s vessel ‘Assasin’ and Mal’s family home at Kawau as a base meant we would be quickly into the action.

Southern Softbaits
by Michael Rendle
The thirst for knowledge shows no signs of abating when it comes to softbaits. I guess what makes it so special is that this isn’t a fad or a slightly reworked existing technique, this is a whole new mindset! For those of us, and there are many now, who have experienced the fun, excitement and great success generated by fishing softbaits in general, but Gulp! in particular, it will come as no surprise. For the rest of you, all I can say is that two years ago I was where you are. I can honestly say that my fishing has been transformed forever.
